Abstract
Amongst spiral galaxies earlier than Scd, barred morphology is a necessary condition for the IRAS colours of the whole system to resemble those of an HII region. New radio and infrared spectroscopic observations demonstrate that the sources of the excess IRAS fluxes are concentrated near the nuclei of these galaxies but, being resolved on scales of arcseconds are probably regions of vigorous star formation and not active nuclei.
