Geophysical mapping of organic sediments

Abstract

Different geophysical methods can be applied to estimate, lateral and vertical extensions of organic sediments as found at maar lakes or peat areas as an addition to the methods of drilling. We will demonstrate results of three-component seismic surveys and electromagnetic mapping carried out over organic soils in different regions of Northern Germany.

High resolution seismics allowed to map the base of organic sediments (e.g. peat) down to depths of at least 12 m with an accuracy of about 1 m. Vertical seismic profiling from borehole shots allowed to resolve internal boundaries of the organic layers due to different degrees of compaction. The mapping of electric conductivity by electromagnetic induction methods proved to be a fast method in detecting lateral boundaries between organic and mineralic soils.
