Small-angle neutron scattering investigation of phase separation kinetics of a diblock copolymer

Abstract

The application of radiation scattering methods to investigate the phase separation kinetics of block copolymers is discussed from the view point of the random phase approximation. Experimental data for a series of equilibrium and time0-resolved experiments have been obtained using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Values of the interaction parameter and the Onsager coefficient (characterising copolymer interdiffusion processes) have been obtained by non-linear least squares fitting to data. The values of the Onsager coefficient are compared with available theoretical estimates.

  7. The model used by Leibler is that pertaining to weak segregation of the components in the block copolymer, i.e. ψ (r) changes smoothly over the wavelength of a concentation fluctuation. Models for the strong segregation limit more appropriate to microphase separated copolymers have been provided by Ohta and Kawasaki (Macromolecules 19:2621 (1986)) and Fredrickson and Helfand (J Chem Phys 87:697 (1987)). By this model the latter obtain (x N)c=10.495+41.02 N −1/3
