Abstract

The size, shape and hydration of micelles (Triton-X-100, NaDDS, NP-10, NP-13, NP-18) in aqueous media were estimated based on micellar molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity data. The hydration values were estimated by using the Simha factor. The most consistent data (i.e. degree of hydration) were obtained when assuming an ellipsoidal shape of Triton-X-100 micelles as being oblate, while prolate shapes did not give useful values, both as regards hydration and axial ratios. However, the analyses of other micellar systems did not provide a definite conclusion as regards the ellipsoidal shape.
