Abstract

Conventional polarizing microscopy and Hoffman modulation contrast optics were used to investigate the defect structures of lamellar liquid crystalline phases in dilute anionic surfactant systems, i. e., those containing at least 85% water. Based on the results obtained an improved model of the so-called oily streak defects is proposed. It features two rows of edge dislocations which have wavy configurations due to buckling. Some defects in parabolic focal conic arrays are described.
