Experimental evidence for repulsive and attractive forces not accounted for by conventional DLVO theory

Abstract

Results from direct force measurements between mica surfaces and modified mica surfaces immersed in aqueous electrolyte solutions are reported. In particular, experimentally observed attractive and repulsive deviations from force curves, calculated from conventional DLVO theory, are discussed. Such “additional” forces are present in most systems. Even in cases where the measured interaction appears to be well described by conventional DLVO theory, the values of, for example, surface charge densities obtained by fitting calculated forces to measurements should not be viewed as true values.
