Abstract

A general survey about the characteristic properties of ferroelectrics is given first. This is followed by a discussion of some recent developments in the field of ferroelectrics. They are:

  1. (1)

Nucleation of domain and domain wall motion during switching of a ferroelectric crystal, in particular of sidewise motion of the walls and the switching in extremely high electric fields.

  2. (2)

Relaxation of the dielectric constant at high frequencies and the infrared reflectivity of BaTiO3, which in connection with the theory of Cochran leads to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in ferroelectricity.

  3. (3)

Behaviour of the optical absorption edge of a ferroelectric material in an applied electric field.

  4. (4)

Some problems connected with the space charge in ferroelectrics, in particular, the influence of space charge on switching and on stability of the material.
