Abstract

Spatial dispersion, i. e. a nonlocal dielectric response, leads to difficulties with the boundary value problem. We show that different types of nonlocal behaviour can be distinguished and that the complication at the boundary in each case is of a different nature. We analyze multipole effects that may lead to modification of Maxwell's conditions, dead layer effects that are caused by extended excitons, and propagator effects leading to the so called ABC-problem. In part I continuum models are used. Part II is based on discrete models. The boundary conditions for a phonon, Frenkel exciton and Wannier exciton are discussed.
