Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on high-T c superconductors produced a wealth of information on the lattice dynamics of this class of materials. For (La,Sr)2CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O6/O7 the very complex phonon disperson curves could be unravelled to a large extent. They reflect on the one hand the ionic character of these compounds, on the other hand the screening of the Coulomb forces by free carriers. A model analysis of the dispersion curves shows the need for long range forces as in the case of conventional superconductors. Anomalous features were observed for high frequency Cu−O bond bending and bond stretch vibrations, which have no counterpart in classical superconductors. Strong changes of the anomalies on doping point to an electronic origin of these phenomena.
