Abstract

It is shown that many synthetic metals, including high temperature superconductors are “bad metals”, with such a poor conductivity that the usual mean-field theory of superconductivity breaks down because of anomalously large classical and quantum fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter. It is argued that the supression of a first order phase transition (phase separation) by the long-range Coulomb interaction leads to high temperature superconductivity accompanied by static or dynamical charge inhomogeneity. Evidence in support of this picture for high temperature superconductors is described.
