The barred galaxy NGC 1530

Abstract

The barred galaxy NGC 1530 has been observed in a large number of wavebands, including spectral lines in H1, Hα and CO, giving a nearly complete velocity field across the whole nuclear and bar region. Strong unresolved (4″ or 700 pc) velocity discontinuities are observed across the dustlanes that we identify with large scale shocks observed in hydrodynamic simulations. Although hydrodynamical models are generally used to constrain the mass model, the observations could in turn be used to find a better ISM descriptor.
