Abstract

The basic ingredients of the present theories of elementary particles and their interactions are reviewed on an elementary level. The aim is to convey the physical motivations for gauge theories using the notion of symmetry as a guiding principle. Realistic theories like Quantum Electrodynamics, the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model, and Quantum Chromodynamics are briefly discussed. The idea of Grand Unification is introduced.
