On the usage of standard mobile agent platforms in telecommunication environments

Today distributed object technology / middleware, such as OMG's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), has gained considerable acceptance in the telecommunication systems. In addition, mobile agent technology is currently gaining momentum in the telecommunication domain, too. The recent OMG work on a Mobile Agent System Interoperability Facility (MASIF) specification can be regarded as a milestone on the road toward a unified distributed mobile object middleware, which enables technology and location transparent interactions between static and mobile objects. This paper illustrates what basic functionality is covered by today's mobile agent platforms, what functionality is covered by the MASIF, and particularly what additional functionality has to be provided by the application designer, in order to make use of a mobile agent platform for specific telecom applications. As an example we illustrate this by the usage of a state of the art commercial mobile agent platform, Grasshopper developed by GMD FOKUS and IKV++, in the context of Intelligent Networks.
