Abstract

As discussed in this paper the arguments in favor of the existence of biexcitons are very strong for CuCl and CuBr. In these two substances as well the kinetics as the value of the binding energy is in a reasonable agreement with the theory.

It is probable that biexcitons can be formed also in other substances. Some strong arguments seem to exist in the case of CdS, CdSe and also in Ge and Si. However, in these cases some important shortcomings are also to be noted: the calculated binding energy is several times smaller than the value obtained from the experiment. Furtheron the width of the biexciton recombination line is very large in comparison to the theoretical and also to the experimental binding energy. It is hoped that new experiments and theoretical considerations will clarify these difficulties.

In the cases where the arguments in favor of biexcitons are sufficiently established it is of interest to study the fine structure (if any) of the biexciton line. It is shown that in this study new data of some importance can be obtained.

Finally, the physics of biexcitons, their possible Bose condensation and temperature effects can reasonably be hoped to make important progress in the near future.

This work was carried out within the frame of the agreement on French-German scientific cooperation between C.N.R.S., Paris, Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, and Universität Stuttgart.
