Abstract

In the frame of the MBA course on Informatics, taught at the Business School of the University of Lausanne, we are experimenting the validity of ARIANE, an Internet-based Pedagogical Environment.

ARIANE addresses some of the needs of both teachers and learners. It provides the Teaching Team with authoring tools to facilitate (i) the creation and storage of course material in the so-called Knowledge Pool under the form of identifiable pedagogical expositive or active components and (ii) the organization of those components into a pertinent pedagogical Learning Sequence. Learners are offered a user-friendly interface to access the pedagogical material of the Informatics curriculum. Going through the Learning Sequence, session by session, is supposed to prepare the students to a richer class interaction. Instead of traditional ex-cathedra lectures on the basics of the domain, the pedagogue will be able to focus on Technology update debates, Case studies and Article discussions. Both categories of users are provided with structured communication services to allow for collaborative and team work. A pedagogical scenario has been carefully set up to determine the conditions of ARIANE experiment.

Assessement of ARIANE will include checking on the number of registered connections to the environment, and on the volume of pedagogical material inserted into the Knowledge Pool. Qualitative evaluations coming both from the pedagogues and the learners should help us tune the functional specifications of the system.
