Abstract
The term “large-amplitude collective nuclear motion” is explained, and examples are given which are taken from nuclear fission, and from heavy-ion reactions. The connection is established between this mode of nuclear motion, and collective behaviour as studied through Giant Resonances and Sum Rules. Theoretical methods to deal with largeamplitude phenomena are surveyed, and some open problems are mentioned.
