Abstract
In the world of today the construction of complex systems cannot be limited to what is technologically feasible but has to take into account what is desirable and manageable by humans. Theories and methodologies from Cognitive Science (being an interdisciplinary research area whose goal is to create a better understanding of a broad range of cognitive abilities like design, understanding, learning, remembering and thinking) are an important source of knowledge and insight towards the construction of user-centered systems.
In the last ten years we have designed and constructed a variety of systems and tools in the areas of knowledge-based systems, human-computer communication and intelligent user support systems. Human factors considerations and results from Cognitive Science have served as design principles. Simultaneously the construction of these systems has contributed towards further progress in Cognitive Science by generating a large number of interesting and challenging problems for it.
