Abstract

Vaccination against rabies was discovered by L. Pasteur a hundred years ago. If the original “Pasteur's treatment” is no longer used, various types of neural tissue vaccines, prepared from the brain of experimentally infected animals, are still produced and applied in many countries. These vaccines are poorly protective and often responsible for untoward reactions.

Cell cultures have introduced the rabies vaccines into a new and modern era.

From inoculated cell cultures rabies virus may be obtained in a pure form and in large amounts. Concentrated and purified virus may be used for the preparation of highly immunogenic and well tolerated vaccines, applicable either to pre-exposure immunization or to post-exposure rabies treatment.

With the newly introduced biotechnologies, such as the large bioreactors and the micro-carriers, these cell culture rabies vaccines may be produced at an industrial scale and at a reasonable cost.
