Abstract
In recent years, barrier-free accessibility, universal design, and social welfare support have been recognized as roadblocks for people with disabilities in their social inclusion. Moreover, the development of learning support and exhibition techniques for the visually impaired remains a long-term issue in research on barrier-free accessibility in European museums. This study focuses on the learning support for the visually impaired people in museums. We discussed the research till date. Moreover, we point out the shortcomings of current research, summarize previous surveys of existing museum facilities, and then propose a new universal design for learning support. To obtain an initial feedback and verification of the design, we conducted an evaluation experiment with the participation of children at the Museum of Nature and Human Activities, Hyogo. The results showed that the participants enjoyed learning about animals and had an unusual experience that incorporated tactile sensations. Future research will expand the scope of the test to include the visually impaired. This report outlines the design process of “ROUND ZOO” and the initial deliverable, “Content Design to Support Learning in Museums'’.
