Abstract
The first step in the compartmental approach to diagnosing spinal tumors is to determine whether the lesion is osseous, extradural non-osseous (ED), intradural extramedullary (IDEM), intramedullary (IM), or multi-compartment. This is important because the possible differential diagnoses and surgical approaches for tumors depend on their location within the spinal compartments. In this chapter, we aim to discuss the imaging characteristics and provide examples of tumors that can occur within each compartment of the spine, following a compartmental approach. We will focus on the compartmental classification of spinal tumors and their corresponding radiological features.
