Abstract

Immediate consequences of GSM are bleeding whose severity depends on the anatomopathological level of injury. For obvious vascular reasons, penectomies provoke more severe bleeding than orchidectomy and may cause hypovolemic shock and even lead to death if unattended. Our review revealed not less than six deaths caused by GSM. One of them was a patient with self-penectomy and extra-genital mutilations and autophagia who bled to death [1]. Other consequences are local infections and sepsis. Maggots and secondary myiasis of the penile stump were also described in a case with a late presentation [2]. In the great majority of the patients who survived a GSM, the prognosis can be studied in two separate subgroups: voluntary eunuchs and patients undergoing penile replantation.
