Abstract

In 1954, Glenister proposed the so-called ectodermal intrusion theory of penile urethral development within the glans, whereby the penis is formed from the surface ectoderm growing into the glans and joining the endodermal urethral plate at the junction of the penile body and the glans [1, 2]. This can explain why the most frequent location of hypospadias is at the junction between the penile shaft and the glans penis, namely at the coronal sulcus [3].
