Acetabular Constraints in Revision Hip Arthroplasty

Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract

Dislocations following total hip arthroplasty, either primary or revision, are the causes of revision surgeries in a percentage of cases. Treatment can be as innocuous as a closed reduction or as radical as revision surgery. Though the etiology is multifactorial, it can be idiopathic; malpositioning of the components and abductor mechanism weakness are common primary etiologies. There are various strategies in managing a dislocating hip and acetabular revision, and the use of special acetabular liners is one such solution. Based on the designs, it can be a constrained acetabular liner or a tripolar constrained head.
