Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract

Periprosthetic infection of the hip (PJI) is one of the catastrophic complications following total hip arthroplasty (THA). It imposes physical, mental and socio-economic burden on affected patients.

Although there are various options available to tackle post-THA infection, a two-stage revision remains the gold standard. Multiple spacer options, including various forms of static and articulating spacers, exist following component extraction during the first stage. Hip instability remains to be an issue of concern after two-stage reimplantation without an articulating spacer. This chapter gives a brief overview regarding evidence-based approach in management of periprosthetic joint infection following THA.
