Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most common and successful procedures in orthopaedic surgery. Evaluation of the post-operative radiograph is a crucial skill for the arthroplasty surgeon to assess the adequacy of the surgery done and to objectively evaluate factors that influence clinical outcomes.

The aim of this chapter is to educate surgeons about various modalities available for the radiological evaluation of the THA. It is vital to standardise the reporting of radiological parameters concerning implant positioning. Indications and common findings of advanced imaging modalities like computed tomography and MRI are also covered in this chapter. Advanced imaging is essential for the evaluation of the complicated or painful THA.

This chapter aims to cover the basics of each imaging modality with a discussion on indications, advantages, and disadvantages, to guide the budding arthroplasty surgeon on the options available for a comprehensive radiological evaluation of the total hip arthroplasty.
