Abstract
Part 1, “Dissecting the Power System,” starts with this chapter, which looks into the problems of power systems. It introduces the “truck model” to help understand these problems. Frequency in power is compared to how fast a truck’s tires spin. Just as a truck needs to keep its speed steady whether it is going uphill or downhill, power systems need to manage changing demands while keeping things balanced. This involves keeping the input and output equal at all times. Newcomers to the system have to stick to the set speed to keep the balance. The power system is compared to a truck with no brakes, always running and hard to control. The chapter talks about the challenges of managing renewable energy, which can change quickly. It ends by talking about the “Curse of Power Systems,” which refers to the challenges of running power systems with lots of renewable energy.
