Abstract
At a special session of the German Bundestag on February 27, 2022, newly minted Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared that we had arrived at a zeitenwende, or a change of era (Borchert et al., Z Außen Sicherheitspolit 15(4):429–451, 2022). While the specific context was a radical alteration to German foreign policy consequent to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, essayist Jason (Cowley, J., What Is “Britishness”—And does it still matter?, New Statesman, 2022) believes it also refers to a new moral seriousness in humanity’s approach to the profound intellectual and ethical anxieties of our times.
