Abstract
This chapter discusses the systematic role of universities in engaging with sustainable development. Specifically, this chapter maps out the ways in which universities, as publicly significant large institutions, act to meaningfully address climate change, particularly in terms of mitigating their own environmental impacts. This frequently occurs in contexts where action by governments on climate change is either lacking or not sufficiently rapid to fit the timeframe for keeping global temperature rise under the 1.5 degree goal of the Paris Agreement.
