Abstract
Trinidad and Tobago is an independent, dual-island Caribbean country, operating with many post-British colonial structures. A case study research design was utilised to evaluate the initiative of providing free laptop computers to students transitioning into secondary school. This initiative is linked to the three UNESCO (2015) sustainable development goals (SDGs) of: quality education (SDG 4); reduced inequalities (SDG 10); and sustainable development (SDG 16). The research involved two teacher surveys (N=226) investigating teachers’ information and communication technology (ICT) knowledge and their ICT pedagogical practices, at the time of the initiative. Although there were short comings identified with this free computer initiative, it enabled more students to develop their ICT skills and to access ICT related learning resources, as well as promoting teachers’ competencies and engagement with ICT in the classroom. The core themes of the chapter are social justice, human capital development, and the latent effects of equity-focused interventions.
