Abstract

Activity scheduling is the beginning step towards effective project planning. A construction project manager encounters a significant challenge while dealing with resources. The resources in construction are numerous and have diversified characteristics. Various limitations also constrain the use of resources. The project manager often manipulates the original schedule to incorporate resource restraints. Mathematical methods help to make effective managerial decisions. Optimization theory-based simulation models can be recommended to achieve seamless resource utilization as per the nature of the project. The paper addresses the resource management requirement and issues in two parts. It discusses resource management and its role in current construction projects. The second part of the paper presents a framework for material, human resources and equipment planning management. The importance of resource optimization is described with examples. In the case of material management, the focus is given to inventory control through economic ordering quantity. The minimum moment concept is detailed in connection with manpower management.
