Abstract

The Indian construction industry is repeatedly criticized for not embracing new construction technology and for its inefficiency and lack of innovation. Not much has changed in the fundamental techniques, technologies, and methods of construction for a long. But, it is also well known that applying innovation in the construction sector is not an easy task because of the uniqueness of every project in terms of site context, availability of labor, availability of equipment/technology, weather, client resistance etc. In order to introduce new technologies in the construction industry, there is a need to assess the advantages over the existing ones. There is also a need to assess the deterrents in accepting new technology from the stakeholders in order to understand ways and means to overcome the obstacles. This chapter focuses on these aspects in the Indian scenario with the aim of highlighting the advantages and limitations of new building construction technology in the Indian context.
