Abstract

Late one night in July 1936, in a kiln in northern Shaanxi, a few people were talking around an unpainted square table covered with red felt. Among them, a foreigner was writing passionately, occasionally raising his eyes to look at the Chinese man he was interviewing. An interpreter sat next to him. Candles sparkled among them.
