Abstract
Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) has garnered growing attention in today’s healthcare delivery systems. Good governance and effective interprofessional collaboration are essential for maintaining high-quality patient care. Therefore, there must be enough resources to back the development of IPECP; but many times there is a lack of focus and funding for interprofessional education and training. Therefore, effective governance of the IPECP is necessary if one wants to achieve beneficial results from these initiatives. A governance framework should contain elements such as leadership and accountability, distinct roles and responsibilities, a shared vision and set of objectives, resources and infrastructure, assessment and feedback, and so on. This chapter examines the role of governance in IPECP and discusses the evidence for the effectiveness of IPECP in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs, as well as the importance of government and organizational support for successful implementation. Financial and policy support is essential to the success and growth of IPECP, and can take many forms, through governmental departments or ministries, or membership organizations dedicated to IPECP. It suggests ways in which government can increase interprofessional collaboration in healthcare, such as enforcing policies that jointly educate specialists and other medical staff and addressing accountability issues. Member organizations serve to make recommendations and advocate for best practice in IPECP along with disseminating research and programming to help build a collaborative workforce. This chapter suggested a framework for governance in Saudi Arabia, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, and the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties are each responsible for developing policies, regulations, and a curriculum that promotes the development of a competent healthcare workforce. It also discusses the development of international IPECP member organizations with an example provided from the USA. This chapter is essential for understanding the importance of governance in IPECP and ensuring that these programs are successful.
