Abstract
Not-monitored and uncontrolled disposal of chemicals is continuously contaminating the freshwater resources. This results in a water crisis for drinking, industrial, and other application areas. To tackle this problem numerous water treatment techniques have been utilized and developed over the centuries. Among these methods activated sludge is one of the most versatilely used and extensively studied techniques. This method is well accepted by the treatment facilities due to its low-cost, large clean water output, and easy to control parameters. In presence of biological floc and using aeration both sewage and industrial wastewater can be treated with this method. A comprehensive description of a mechanism, progressive development over time, parameters that control the efficacy of the process, different aeration systems, and types of plant design based on the activated sludge process has been elaborated in this chapter. Furthermore, the existing limitations of the process and probable solutions have also been discussed.
