Challenges of Wastewater and Wastewater Management

Sustainable Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Pollution Control

Abstract

The availability of freshwater is reducing due to the discharge of untreated wastewater to the naturally available resources, such as rivers, ponds, and lakes. This chapter discusses the challenges faced due to the generation of wastewater from the different sources such as domestic wastewater, municipal wastewater, and industrial wastewater. The wastewater generated from households, commercial buildings, and industries is a challenge for a modern society because from the last few years, there is an increase in the presence of toxic substances and emerging contaminants, exposure to these pollutants may cause serious health impact on human and aquatic life. The identification of these contaminations is becoming a challenging task these days. The lack of knowledge on level and concentration of emerging contaminants from the source are creating issue to analyze the presence of contamination. Various types of wastewater treatment methods such as biological, electrochemical, and physicochemical methods to treat the wastewater with their advantages and challenges are discussed in the chapter. The chapter elaborates the main challenges for the management of wastewater, which can be overcome by addressing the issues such as proper availability of facilities for basic sanitation to the people, social challenges, which plays an important role for public acceptance to manage and reuse wastewater, legal aspects for the wastewater management, minimizing the amount of energy required for the wastewater treatment, management, treatment, and reuse of produced sludge, and reuse of wastewater considering all the safety aspects.
