Abstract

Micro- or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) refers to a group of relatively newer devices and procedures aimed at lowering eye pressure through less invasive surgical approaches compared to traditional filtering procedures. In a joint meeting, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Glaucoma Society defined MIGS as surgical procedures and devices that decrease intraocular pressure while requiring less tissue dissection than traditional glaucoma filtering surgery [1]. Since the early 2000s, a variety of MIGS devices have been approved for use, including Schlemm’s canal devices and procedures, subconjunctival devices, suprachoroidal devices, and cycloablation devices. According to Centers for Medicare Services (CMS) data collected from all glaucoma surgeries performed for Medicare beneficiaries, there was a 426% increase in MIGS procedures from 2012 to 2016 [2]. American Academy of Ophthalmology Intelligent Research in Sight (IRIS®) Registry data showed that among eyes with a documented diagnosis of glaucoma, there was a substantial increase in annual MIGS procedures from 2013 to 2018 (7586 to 39,677) and a decrease in traditional glaucoma surgeries (from 16,215 to 13,701), reflecting the increased popularity of MIGS as less invasive surgical options for treating glaucoma [3].
