Abstract

Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis is the most commonly used keratoprosthesis worldwide. Visual and retention outcomes of Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis have significantly improved due to advancements in design and postoperative care. Preoperative patient selection is integral to successful outcomes. Preoperative or concurrent glaucoma surgery should be considered in the presence of glaucoma. Regular lifelong follow-up with measures to prevent infections, maintenance of epithelial integrity, and glaucoma management are critical for optimal outcomes. Continued advances in design and measures to enhance biointegration are likely to improve the outcomes of of keratoprosthesis implantation.
