Insights into Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head

Abstract

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a progressive disease that leads to femoral head collapse and eventually secondary osteoarthritis of the hip joint. AVN occurs frequently in young adults and the middle-aged population has a high rate of disability and it affects the quality of life of patients [1]. Signs and symptoms in the early stage are subtle and require a high level of suspicion, sometimes in presence of associated risk factors. The mode of treatment is primarily based on the radiological staging of the disease. The early stage of the disease permits nonoperative intervention, whereas the late stages of the disease need surgical intervention.
