Abstract

Death of cells and fracture of the subchondral bone lead to collapse of the articular surface, all of which are caused by a compromised femoral head circulation. There is loss of the underlying structural framework of the diseased bone, which is resorbed by osteoclasts; when this occurs prior to revascularization and regeneration, the disease process could lead to joint involvement and arthritis. It frequently takes a relentless course that leads to a substantial loss of function and typically affects relatively young, active adults between the ages of 20 and 40. As a result, it is one of the most common reasons for hip replacement in the young to middle age population.
