Abstract

In recent decades, substantial evidence has been accumulated on the use of adjuvant treatment for patients with locoregional gastric cancer. However, standard treatment varies between countries or regions around the world due to surgical procedure, tumor heterogeneity, historical/epidemiological background, and clinical setting, despite several phase III clinical trials of adjuvant combined modality therapy have shown beneficial effects of adjuvant treatment [1]. In particular, D2 gastrectomy is essential and minimally invasive surgery is also being explored increasingly around the world [2]. In East Asian countries, postoperative chemotherapy is recommended for patients who have undergone primary dissection of D2 lymph nodes [3, 4], perioperative chemotherapy is the preferred approach to resectable gastric cancer in Europe [5, 6], and postoperative chemoradiation has been accepted as standard therapy in the United States for patients who received less than a D2 lymph node dissection [7]. Therefore, this chapter will summarize previous studies and discuss current treatment options for adjuvant treatment of gastric cancer.
