Nanotechnology Based Strategies for Combating Antimicrobial Resistance

Abstract

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for the rapid development of effective technology to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Poor diagnosis and overuse of medications induce antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This chapter is focused on therapeutic modalities that have been formulated and suggested to address this particular issue. Recent studies have shown the efficacy of nanotechnology in addressing the issue of antimicrobial resistance. The present chapter provides an overview of recent advancements in nanotechnology that exhibit potential for combating resistant pathogens. The feasibility and potential of these technologies for novel antimicrobial therapies are also evaluated. In this chapter, various nanotechnology approaches that are being rapidly developed for the management of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have been discussed. Furthermore, the impact of inorganic carriers, specifically metal nanoparticles such as copper, zinc, and silver on biofilm populations, has been examined. This chapter provides an extensive overview of the future prospects of nanotechnology for overcoming antimicrobial resistance.
