Abstract
After retiring from ISRO in 2003, while serving as member Rajyasabha, Dr Kasturirangan took on the responsibility of leading the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), which gave him an opportunity to nurture and promote multidisciplinary research and to bring about a greater awareness and recognition of this institution.
This chapter reflects the unique character of two of Dr Kasturirangan’s assignments in professional life; where he was entrusted with creating and running institutions which were one of their types and which needed out of box thinking for their leadership and management. The two innovative institutions described in this chapter reflect the special nature of such institutions and the way he dealt with them.
