Abstract
Mr. Masami Sato opened the Shirakaba acupuncture clinic in Sapporo in 1995. He is an accredited acupuncturist and also has a Ph.D. I first met him 20 years ago at a workshop organized by the Department of Neurosurgery, Hokkaido University School of Medicine. Unlike other acupuncturists, he enthusiastically communicated with spine- and spinal cord surgeons and I thought him to be different from other members of his group. Although there is no clear evidence for the clinical benefits of acupuncture in patients with spinal diseases, some achievements have been reported. I remember a patient with persistent low back pain after lumbar surgery whose pain was dramatically alleviated by acupuncture treatment.
