Abstract

Paralumbar spine disease and lower limb entrapment neuropathy are not often diagnosed and treated, although their incidence may be very high when patients with mild symptoms are included.

The characteristics of paralumbar spine disease and lower limb entrapment neuropathy are:

  1. 1.

Typical symptoms are sensory disturbance, numbness, and pain in the peripheral innervation area of a peripheral nerve. Motor paralysis is not a common symptom.

  2. 2.

Confirmation of the tender point or Tinel-like signs over the area of entrapment is diagnostically important as is symptom abatement by blockage of the affected nerve.

  3. 3.

Imaging studies such as MRI and CT and nerve conduction studies are not informative. As the symptoms of these diseases are very similar to those of lumbar diseases, a differential diagnosis must be made.
