Abstract

This chapter examines the development of electronic music scene in Łódź, which is the third largest city in Poland, focusing on the period from the 1990s to the present day, against the backdrop of Łódź’s political and social history. The chapter pays attention to artists connected to the city, the spaces in which they performed, such as clubs and music festivals and the genres which took root in Łódź, particularly drum and bass. It also presents the legal framework and initiatives of local politicians, which affected electronic music produced and consumed in Łódź. It also tests the hypothesis that there is a specific fit between the city and the type of electronic music which has flourished there. The authors draw on the research on electronic music, scenes and the concept of music ecologies.

Notes

  1. 1.

We use here a Polish spelling of ‘Łódź’, the city is also known as Lodz.

  2. 2.

Following the loss of economic and military power, Poland was partitioned three times in the second half of the eighteenth century, between its neighbours, Russia, Prussia and the Habsburg Empire. As a result of the third partition in 1795 Poland lost its statehood and regained sovereignty only in 1918.
