A Case Study of Key Processes Experienced in an English “A” Level Literature Classroom

When considering the concept of modernity, we need to look through the lens of the local in order to chart our own development as a modern, independent nation. A cursory search about teaching Literature in English in Brunei (henceforth Literature) only comes up with Chin, Ho and Alkaff (International Journal of Learning 18:117–134, 2012), a preliminary investigation into the teaching of Literature in the Bruneian ESL Classroom. As a current teacher of Literature with ten years of experience, I find this lack of research into the Bruneian experience of teaching Literature alarming. How can teachers improve professionally, and how can they be sure that what they are doing in the classroom is effective for their students?
