Abstract
Inconel 718 is a nickel-based superalloy, widely used in high-temperature applications due to its high fatigue endurance and ability to retain mechanical and chemical properties at an elevated temperature. But it is an extremely difficult task to machine the material due to its high hardness and low thermal conductivity. As a consequence, grinding of Inconel 718 also poses severe problems such as higher force requirement and high heat generation. Surface quality, thereby, deteriorates and wheel life is also shortened. Use of conventional cutting fluids further increases the net manufacturing cost. In the present work, a novel method of application of a cheap detergent–water solution with the help of a micropump is highlighted and a comparative study is made with conventional cutting fluids in terms of force requirements, surface quality, specific energy, grinding ratio and chip form observations.
