Abstract

This chapter analyses child survival progress in India during the 40 years between 1971 and 1975 through 2011–2015 in terms of the improvement in the survival probability during the first 18 years of life. The chapter highlights the unsatisfactory progress towards securing the life of Indian children during the 40 years under reference. A disturbing finding of the present analysis is that the child survival progress in the country appears to have slowed down after 1991–1995 which appears to be the reason behind the country missing the MDG 4 of the United Nations Millennium Development Agenda. From the global perspective, an accelerated improvement in child survival probability in India is the need of the time so as to achieve the targets set under United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
