Abstract
The paper describes how CUHK is developing video-assisted case sets (Cases) as part of the Service Leadership Initiative (SLI). Cases can be effective in supplementing traditional lecture-based methods to train leaders, introducing interactive and applied pedagogy, and assessing students. As a part of the flipped classroom, videos are increasingly and effectively used in education and can promote the goals of SLI. Production of a Case involves a writer, a producer, a camera person, and an editor. Six Cases have been completed; another six are in various stages of production, and 13 have been indefinitely postponed. We conclude that finding compelling Case subjects is challenging; leadership issues are more understandable for students in the words of the leader expressed through videos; obtaining academic faculty commitment for Case development with real-world leaders is difficult; the risks of non-completion of Case writing are high because of leader risk aversion; video production and editing services may be more effective if accomplished by in-house expertise; instructor risk aversion militates against Case adoption, and placement of a Case with platforms cross listed with Harvard Business Publishing is a necessary but not sufficient condition to effective distribution.
