Core Techniques of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Abstract

Over the past few decades, various treatments of chronic discogenic back pain for degenerative disc disease (DDD) have been introduced. Several types of lumbar total disc replacement (TDR) have been developed as an alternative to lumbar fusion surgery for treatment of DDD. TDR was anticipated not only to avoid fusion surgery-related complications but also to restore disc height at the treated level while removing the cause of pain in disc, which reduces adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) compared with a lumbar interbody fusion. TDR operation needs an anterior lumbar approach which is not familiar to traditional spine surgeons. The authors will describe indications, operative steps in detail, surgical pitfalls, and complications of lumbar TDR in this chapter.
